Chiapas, México - San Cristobal de las Casas & Palenque
September 23, 2007
We're now in the state of Chiapas, home of the infamous Zapatistas, and wow what a different feel there is to this place. Still in Mexico, but then again it feels like we're in a completely different country. It's still very beautiful, however, there's more of a mysterious and magical feel to this place. Never know when Comandante Marcos is going to cross our path!! Nah!!!
Getting to our destination was an interesting one, filled with lots of turns and all that good stuff . . . probably 'cause we were driving through La Selva!! Poor Arnaud even got sick because of all the motion!! Because we had such a long trip, we decided to stop off in the capital of Chiapas, Tuxtla Gutierrez, for the night; and then continue onward to San Cristobal de las Casas the next morning to check out what all the hype was about. And as expected, we were pleased with what we saw. Very beautiful town, a lot more peaceful than the other towns we've been to thus far, and the people are a lot more reserved and timid. All around us we saw petit indigenous women in their traditional wear, walking the streets of this rather "modern" town. Funny thing was to see the contrasts. I went into the bank to change some money, and wow, how I felt out of place! Couldn't understand a word anyone was saying around me!
So we visited the town and then off we went to "Las Cascadas de Agua Azul." Very beautiful place, even though we got caught in a thunderstorm on our way there!! And still, Arnaud took a dip, in the pouring rain! Check out the pictures!! Our stay was short though because it rained all night long, and so the the waterfalls no longer looked blue but more like chocolate!! Oh well!!
Then off we went to Palenque! Amazing place; although gotta admit that I'm a bit biased and have to say that I prefered the pyramids in Teotihuacan more!! But hey if you're in the area, it's a must-see place!
