Chiang Mai, Thailand - La coupe à 50 centimes d euro!!

Our journey to the North of Thailand was a very long one, but fortunately we did eventually make it to Chiang Mai.

As you may have already read, the trip up North was blessed with many new encounters.

Our ride from Sukhothai to Chiang Mai, itself, was no different.

What an incredible feeling it is when meeting such genuine, giving people.

Once again . . . yes, AGAIN!  We met another selfless individual, just wanting to help out a couple of tired backpackers!!  Yes, us!!  :)

Long story short, after catching a ride with a nice couple heading home, we were kindly invited to stay over their place.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Un repas traditionnel
Just like that . . . well, not exactly!!  :)

Here’s what happened . . .

As we jumped out of the vehicle, and as we noticed that nightfall would soon be upon us, Arnaud and I looked at each other with the same idea in mind, of course . . . "Should we ask if we can set up camp at their place??"

And so, Arnaud popped the question, "Do you have a yard . . .?"  A smile came to her face, because it was most likely the first time she’d heard that;

But our request was kindly accepted, after a quick talk/explanation with her partner.

And get this, not only did we have a sure place to stay that night, we also had a guaranteed ride all the way to Chiang Mai, the following day!!

So, we spent another lovely evening amongst friendly faces, once again.

The great thing is that we were immediately taken in as part of the family.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Et ça fume encore à cet âge!!
There was a slight language barrier, but luckily we did manage to communicate some.

Arnaud even had his first haircut by the village hairdresser, or better yet, the mama of the family we were staying with.  ;)

Not bad at all, either!!  She did a pretty good job!  Hey, can’t beat a $.50 haircut!!  :)

After that it was nothing but good times . . . Arnaud got a good taste of the local whiskey with the guys and also got a taste of another specialty, SNAKE!!!

As for me, although I was told that it wasn’t so bad, maybe just a bit too spicy; I couldn’t bring myself to try it!!

Just not that adventurous, I guess!!  :(   It would be just rice for me that evening!!

The following day, we got an early start, and I mean, EARLY!!  Our hosts told us that we would be leaving before sunrise, and indeed we did!!  Try having to take off at 4:30am!!!

On the bright side, though, at least, we made it to Chiang Mai by 7am!!  :)

Upon arrival in Chiang Mai, we said our "thank yous" and "goodbyes" and were on our way to look for accommodation.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Images of Chiang Mai

Being that it’s a rather big, touristy town, we figured we’d treat ourselves to a couple restful nights at a cheap guesthouse.

It’d been a LONG time since we last had to pay for accommodation, so why not!?

And God knows how much we needed and enjoyed it!!

All in all, Chiang Mai is an incredible place.  I can understand why it’s known as the "Rose of the North."

The landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful.  The city, itself, although swarming with tourists, is quite the charming place, with all its temples and Buddhist monks adding that special touch to it.

Definitely glad, we made it here.

Of course, our visit to Chiang Mai wouldn’t have been complete without a visit to one of the many Elephant camps, or Orchid/Butterfly farms nearby.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Wat Ou Sai Kham

And, obviously, the visits to the many hillside tribe villages to top it off.

But, unfortunately to do so, we had to participate in a guided tour, which we just love SOOOOO much!  Argh!  :(

I have to admit, though, we highly enjoyed ourselves during the tour.

Our guide was ok, and though, I had to huff and puff at one point during the day, I was pleased with everything at the end of it all.

So, it was an eventful and interesting day, no doubt.

We started out with a visit to a factory that recycles elephant dung to make various paper products . . . never thought I’d see this, but gotta say, pretty good idea!!

Imagine writing on paper that used to be elephant poo!!  Hey, if these folks are creative enough to make a living off of elephant manure .

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Les bouddha de Jade au Wat Ou Sai Kham
. . why not!?

And, honestly, I think the guide just so happened to make an unplanned stop here, in hopes that the "tourists" would spend some money, buying stationary, photo albums, or picture frames, from these folks.

Sure do wish we could’ve helped them out.  And though we found the idea to be truly original, everything was just too expensive for us, so we had to pass!!  :(

From there, we continued on to our visit to the orchid/butterfly farm.  Not as spectacular, but a nice little stop-off, in any case.

Now, afterwards is where things got interesting.

Our tour, also included white water rafting and bamboo rafting, so that would surely be fun!

And it was, considering it was the first time for both Arnaud and myself.  You should’ve heard me screaming my lungs off, as we rafted down the river.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Wat Phan On

It was lots of fun, for sure.  Still, I was both happy and relieved when it was all over.  Good time, though!

Next up . . . elephant riding!!  Yeah! I was really psyched about it, until I saw the poor fellas all chained up, just waiting their turn to take the tourists for a ride.

It was truly heart-breaking, but then again, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy myself during our stroll on the elephant.

What an amazing experience.  It was like being up high in the trees, as we rode off into the jungle, with our elephant.

Such a big, powerful creature . . . wow!  We felt so tiny, while sitting on top of our elephant’s back . . . well, I felt tiny, in any case!!

The rafting activities were definitely lots of fun and a new experience, but I’d have to say that our stroll with the elephants was the highlight of the day.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Wat Phan On

Our visit to the hillside tribes was fun too, but not as thrilling as I’d expected.  As it’s presented by the tour agency, it’s supposed to be a truly cultural and genuine experience.

But honestly, I didn’t see anything authentic about it.

Well, let me take that back . . . I did appreciate the experience, but I was a bit disappointed with the marketing/sales tactics used by the agencies.

My fault too, I guess, maybe I was a bit too naïve, as well.

There I was thinking that everyone would be dressed in their traditional costumes, as is always the case everyday for them, but it didn’t exactly happen that way.

It felt almost as if, we showed up at the wrong time, and so the villagers weren’t ready for us tourists.

Our first visit was to the Akha village, where to my disappointment, the place was like a ghost town.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Wat Phan On

Supposedly, because it was Sunday, everyone was out at church . . . well, that’s the bull our guide wanted to feed us, in any case!

And, personally, if it hadn’t been for the couple of Akha folks that I did eventually see, in their traditional clothing, our agency would have heard from me at the end of the day, no doubt.

The other hillside tribes, we had the chance of encountering, included the Lisu, Lahu, and let me not forget the Long Neck Karen people.

All very interesting, however, also seemed a bit staged

As for the Long Neck Karen folk, I was particularly interested in coming up close and personal with them, because this tribe was one of my main reasons for having wanted to visit Myanmar.

But since the typhoon devastation, any entry into Myanmar is nearly impossible, and thus the reason for us not being able to visit it.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Wat Phan On

So, the next best thing was to see them here in Northern Thailand, where many of them have migrated in search of a better life.

Don’t really know if that’s been achieved, because they looked quite miserable and bothered, despite what our guide wanted us to believe.

According to him, they were happier here because they have better lives here compared to their country . . . hmmm?!!

Don’t know how I’d feel about always having bus loads of tourists constantly dropping by for an uninvited visit.  Their home is no zoo, after all.

Anyway, that wrapped up our long, busy day . . . full of lots of fun, new adventures, and endless memories.

So long, for now!

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Wat Phan On

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Wat Chedi Luang

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Wat Chedi Luang

I'm not big on the guided tours either...hate that.. And I certainly don't approve of the ways animals are treated in Asia, specially since I'm am animal doctor.
