Beijing, China - Le Tarot chinois

Alright so, about THE train ride . . . It was NEVER-ENDING!!!  Good thing we had seats, though!!

At the start of the journey, everything seemed as if everything was going to be orderly, but things soon changed . . . and I mean soon!!

Hmmm?  Why, you might be wondering?  Well, firstly, it was a national holiday in China, the ever so infamous "Golden Week."

And secondly, practically everyone travels during this period . . . which unfortunately for us, meant an over-crowded train!!!

So, obviously, as you can imagine, we were in store for a FUN train ride!!

All throughout the journey, it was passenger after passenger, until no one else could fit.  Wait a second, we are in China, right?!!

So, of course, over-crowding is understandable and acceptable .

Beijing, China - Leur première raclée
. . all that needed to be done was some pushing and shoving, that’s all!!!

Again, thank God, we had seats, because there were many, and I mean MANY folks who didn’t.

Now, you might be wondering, "So, where did they sit?" . . . They didn’t!!  It’s as simple as that!!!  It was almost as if all of China was on our train!!

There were people EVERYWHERE.  Standing all up along the aisle, hanging around the toilets, even sitting on the sinks that were just located near the toilets!!

Speaking of the toilets, I think these were amongst the filthiest I’d ever seem thus far.  Wait gotta take that back . . . since our arrival to China, every public facility has been absolutely filthy!!

I don’t wanna say it but from what I’ve seen so far, the folks here aren’t too worried about the cleanliness of these places!!  The public facilities in this country are so smelly and disgusting!!

Pretty inconsiderate of the folks not thinking about others also having to use these public places!!  But hey, I guess they think, "when you gotta go, you gotta go, no matter what!!"

And hey, if you don’t wanna use the public restroom, there are always the bushes, which sadly to say, are probably a lot cleaner!!  :(  But enough about the smelly toilets!!  Let’s talk noodles!!

The Chinese sure do love them some noodles!!  No joke!!  They eat this for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!!  And hey, as the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans!”

So for us, “When in China, do as the Chinese!”  And that’s sure what we did!  We definitely got our fair share of noodles here .

Beijing, China - Too cute to eat!! ;)
. . for a lifetime!!  :)

At first, it was a bit weird eating noodles for breakfast, but it soon grew on us.

Had no choice, really, especially since the only easily-accessible resource on the train was hot water!!  So, of course, noodles would have to do the trick for then!!

Now thinking back though, there were guys trying to pass up and down the aisles selling some Chinese platters.

Still, I was somewhat hesitant to try the food being served on the train, especially after noticing how the staff kept up the public toilets!  No thank you!!

I’d just have to settle for eating instant noodles for the next 38 hours!!

Anyway, besides being overcrowded, the train ride went pretty smoothly.  Got a chance to view the stunning Chinese landscapes along the way, and pretty much just that!!  :)

Arnaud, on the other hand, spent most of the journey playing cards with the Chinese passengers.

Beijing, China - Arnaud & Ryan in Xiang Shan Park, situated in the Fragrant Hills, 28 kilometers west of cental Beijing
Never knew that the Chinese were so into card games either!!

Seems as though everyone plays, both guys and gals, alike.  And all for fun, no betting, at all!

Yeah so, Arnaud found himself playing a Chinese version of poker with a bunch of strangers, and it was all good!!  Sure did help the time fly by for him!!  Perfect, ‘cause wouldn’t want him getting restless on the train!!  ;)  Love you, chéri!!

And that’s how we spent our first LONG train ride!!  "Patience, patience, Juanny" . . . that’s what I kept telling myself . . . "Just a few more hours then we’ll be in Beijing!!"

Here at last!!!!!  The incredible journey to Beijing has finally come to an end!!

Wow, the joy and relief we felt as we stepped off the train was, was .

Beijing, China - J&A at Xiang Shan Park, aka Fragrant Hill Park
. . still can’t find the words to describe our feeling!

So now, Welcome to Beijing and get ready for another unforgettable adventure!!!!  :)

First impressions . . . are all the people in the world in this one place, or what?!!

Boy, Kunming and the train ride there don’t even compare to how packed with folks Beijing is!!

Beijing = Over-crowded!!  There are people everywhere, literally.  No wonder there are fences lined all up along the street and sidewalks!!  Gotta keep in all the herds of people from flowing into the streets, right?!  Weird first-time experience!

Actually, many times, I did almost feel like a caged animal, walking down the streets, amongst the crowds.

Just imagine . . . folks everywhere, walking one after the other, and not really knowing in what direction to go, just following the sea of people.

Beijing, China - Xiang Shan Park, aka Fragrant Hill Park

A bit frustrating, I must say, but not too hard to deal with once you get "used" to it.

All we had to do was avoid being trampled over by all the Chinese, pushing and shoving their way through, that’s all.  Still amazed over ALL the people all over the place!!

Another surprising thing about this city is all the pollution around.  During our entire stay here, I don’t think I saw a single star, due to all the smog in the sky.  Sounds crazy, huh?!!

What’s even crazier is that, actually, I’d say we really lucked out while in Beijing.  Why?

To put it simply, we were lucky just to have had been able to see a bit (and I mean, a small bit!!) of blue sky when we did some sightseeing around here.

Speaking of which, the sights to be seen are spectacular.

Beijing, China - Juanita & Arnaud au parc Xiang Shan
Our visit around Beijing, to The Forbidden City, to The Great Wall, every place we went to was unforgettable.

The Forbidden City was amazing!!  A lot larger than I’d expected, but well worth the visit.  It was like going back in history!!

Truly incredible to think that we were actually strolling down the cobble-stoned streets, where China’s Emperors once reigned.  Who would’ve thought?!!

And The Great Wall!!  Well, that was an unbelievable moment in itself!!  Wow, wow, wow!  It was a particularly moving experience for me, in many ways.

I’d expected so much, and although some hopes didn’t come true, I was still thankful to have had the opportunity to find myself at this awesome man-made wonder of the world.

So, obviously, if you ever make it to Beijing, DO NOT miss out on this must-see sight.

Beijing, China - Le Parc Xiang Shan

The only drawback, unfortunately, is that even in Beijing’s countryside, in the green hills where The Great Wall is located; the smog followed right behind!!

A shame, really, because one would think that being in the countryside, you could take in the fresh clean air . . . well, not here, or anywhere near Beijing, I should say!!!  The pollution is everywhere!! :(

In addition to our amazing sightseeing experiences here, we also were blessed to have met another great individual.

We owe a BIG Thank You, to our host and now dear-friend, Karl, who was kind enough to not only put us up during our time in Beijing, but also go out of his way to show us around the city, as well as take us out to some hot spots for some traditional cooking.

No joints serving the infamous cat and dog dishes, happy to say.

Beijing, China - Xiang Shan Park, aka Fragrant Hill Park - Arnaud at the Cloud Temple
We just enjoyed ourselves some yummy stir fries and other traditional Chinese dishes, for the most part!!

Oh and also thanks to Karl, we discovered dumplings and these tasty lamb kebabs that were DE-LI-CIOUS!!!  Yes!!  No more instant noodles!!!  :)

Didn’t get a chance to try the Peking Duck, though, because it was just too costly for us this time around.  So, that’ll have to wait for next time, for sure!!

Anyway, besides the never-ending crowds of people, and all the pollution, Beijing’s an incredible culturally-rich place, that is NOT to be missed if ever passing through China.  You won’t regret it!!

Just try not to think too much about the LONG journey to get here!!  But hey, if you’ve got the cash, another option is flying!!  A bit more costly, but faster, for sure!

Your choice, but don't skip out on this fascinating city!!  Oh and if possible try to avoid visiting during China’s Golden Week or Chinese New Year!!  ;)

Beijing, China - Xiang Shan Park, aka Fragrant Hill Park - The Cloud Temple

Beijing, China - Xiang Shan Park, aka Fragrant Hill Park - The Cloud Temple

Beijing, China - Xiang Shan Park, aka Fragrant Hill Park - Juanny at the Cloud Temple

Beijing, China - Xiang Shan Park, aka Fragrant Hill Park - The Cloud Temple

Beijing, China - Xiang Shan Park, aka Fragrant Hill Park

Beijing, China - Xiang Shan Park, aka Fragrant Hill Park
