Bangkok, Thailand - Love the hot pink cabs!!

Since our arrival here in Thailand, it’s just been grand!!

I was expecting nothing but positive experiences from this place, and well, that’s what we’ve experienced thus far.

The food is fabulous; the folks are incredibly friendly, which was just perfect for us, because that meant getting help on the road!!

And yes sir, hitchhiking has worked out wonderfully for us here, as well.

We managed to catch a ride from Phuket, pretty much, all the way to Bangkok!!  How sweet was that!!?

Mind you, the distance was huge, and we were wondering how long it would take us to eventually make it to the capital!

It ended up taking us just under 14 hours, which was better than what we’d expected!  We knew that from Phuket, we were WAYS away from Bangkok, and well, a little concerned of the time needed to reach our destination.

Bangkok, Thailand - Tuc-Tuc

Turns out that one of the vehicles that stopped for us early on in the day was heading straight for Bangkok, itself!!

And although, we initially only asked to go to the next big town over, these formidable chaps ended up giving us a lift all the way to the capital!

Well, it wasn’t as easy as it sounds . . . it did take a bit of pleading and convincing, on my part!!  ;)

As is sometimes the case, I’ll get in up front with the driver and passenger, and Arnaud will hop in the back of the vehicle (if it’s a pick-up, obviously!!)

So, of course, being courteous and all, one of us has to do the small talk and find out where the individual is going exactly.

That day, it was up to me!  And when I found out they were going to Bangkok, of course, I had to jump at the chance of possibly catching a ride all the way to our destination with them!!

You see, usually, folks picking us up often just go a few kilometers; but sometimes we do get lucky and catch a lift with folks going a LONG way!!

And today, was one of those occasions!!  Our lucky day!!

So when I learned that they were going all the way to Bangkok, I immediately stated that we were also heading that way.

Bangkok, Thailand - Democracy Monument

Suddenly, puzzled looks appeared on their faces.  They were a bit confused, because as we had said another city at first, and then changed up on them once in the vehicle, they must’ve gotten skeptical or something.

And the little problem of the language barrier didn’t help either, for sure!!

Anyway, I just let them think it over and get over their hesitance a bit, while being the ever-so-sweet person that I can be during the long journey.  :)

And eventually after all the chit-chat, these guys decided, "What the heck!!"  And there you have it!

Get ready for us Bangkok!!

I have to admit that I was quite excited to be going to Bangkok.  I had so many images of this place, mainly positive, but some negatives ideas, as well.

Would it be all that I had imagined?!  I’d just have to wait and see, I guess!!

Upon arrival in Bangkok, we were beat from the long journey, and in a bit of a jam, considering the late hour at which we arrived.

Bangkok, Thailand - Lak Mueang, aka City Pillar Shrine

The ride that was supposed to take about 10 to 12 hours ended up being longer, way longer!!

Hey, at least, we made it safe and sound, so the driver was free to take as many breaks as he liked!!  And we sure did make our share of stops at the rest areas, for sure!!

Anyway, we finally made it to Bangkok at about 4am, and like I already mentioned, we were in a bit of a predicament because we didn’t know how and if we’d make it to our contact’s home.

We didn’t know where he lived exactly, and because it was so late, we weren’t sure if he’d mind us dropping by at that hour!

Our CS contact, Clovis, was awesome, though!!  He was waiting up for us and kind enough to have us arrive even at such a late hour!!

And get this, the guys who gave us a lift to Bangkok, even went out of their way to drop us off right in Clovis’ neighborhood.

Bangkok, Thailand - Monument at the Ministry of Defence
 How perfect was that!!??

The following day, after a well-rested night, we set out for our first visit of the city.

And it was exactly what I’d pictured . . . Chaos & pollution, crowded streets, smiling Thais at every corner, great-smelling foods all over the place, and so much more!!  Have the desire to come here?!!

Many tourists are scared off by some of the things I just mentioned, but not me.

Bangkok is quite the traveler-friendly place and surprisingly safe and more organized than it initially appears.

Personally, the only concern I had about this place, was seeing a bunch of slimy old men with young teeny-boppers . . . that would come later on, unfortunately!!  :(

Get this, we couldn’t have come at a more perfect time .

Bangkok, Thailand - Front lawn of the Saranarom Palace, aka the Ministry of Defence
. . Our arrival coincided with the Queen’s birthday . . . and well, that meant free buses for us and everyone else here!!  Great!!

The Thai people sure do love them some King and Queen!!  It’s amazing, really.

The complete admiration and respect they have for these two individuals . . . I think every Thai household has a picture of their King and Queen, hanging somewhere in their home!!

Anyway, we visited most of Bangkok’s must-see sights, squeezing in as much as we could.  Of course, that included all the beautiful Buddhist temples that are scattered all over the city.

And we also treated ourselves to a little excursion on a fishing boat to pay a visit to the floating market along the canals.

In addition to our little boating adventure, we also decided to take a stroll in one of the many "Tuk Tuk" vehicles that blaze around Bangkok, leaving a black cloud of smog as they zoom on by!!

What would Bangkok be without these 3-wheeled contraptions??!!  Gotta love ‘em or hate ‘em!!

These funny vehicles are pretty much motorbikes with a small carriage that’s somehow been incorporated into the body of the motorcycle .

Bangkok, Thailand - Monument near the Grand Palace
. . or is it the other way ‘round??!!

In any case, you’ll know them when you hear them.  The sound of the motor is unmistakable, and can be heard from a mile away!!  Hence, the reason for its name!  Tuk, tuk, tuk!!!!  Duh!!!

So, of course, we just couldn’t miss out on tuk-tuking down the street!  ;)  Plus, since the driver made us such a sweet deal and also since we were feeling lazy, not wanting to walk and sweat our butts off, how could we say no?!!  :)

As for some of the other cultural activities available (i.e. attending a Thai boxing fight), we had to skip over that one for now, because it was a bit over our price range this time ‘round.  But definitely will be done during next time’s visit!

After our little tour in the Tuk Tuk, we had ourselves a YUMMY Pad Thai, for lunch .

Bangkok, Thailand - Wat Phra Kaew, aka (Emerald Buddha) Grand Palace
. . DE-LI-CIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!  I gotta learn how to make it!

To my disappointment (or maybe not), I didn’t see all the crazy foods I was expecting to see here.

Supposedly, the Thai people have the reputation of eating all sorts of unusual foods . . . well, unusual for us, because we’re simply not accustomed to eating such things.

But no, they’re just stereotypes I heard, for the most part.

Yes, some Thai folk do like to munch on fried grasshoppers, every now and then, but so do Mexicans in Chiapas, or Ecuadorians in Otavalo!!  No biggie!!

I, of course, had to pass up on that very delectable opportunity, haha!  :)  Lucky for me, most Thai food, is very much like what I’m used to . . . a variety of dishes, some spicier than others, and usually consisting of rice or noodles with some sort of meat (usually pork, beef, or chicken!)

And lucky for Arnaud, he was somewhat prepared to handle all these spicy dishes .

Bangkok, Thailand - Exterior of Wat Phra Kaew, aka (Emerald Buddha) Grand Palace
. . well, almost!!

Mexican and Thai food are a bit different, when it comes to the spiciness of the dishes . . . And although our lips were puffy and burning by the time we finished eating, we really enjoyed each Thai specialty we tried . . . we just made sure to have a big bottle of water right next to us!! :)

So, that’s a bit about the nice and pretty part of Thai culture, unfortunately it’s not all this lovely.

There is also an ugly side to this country’s capital, and it’s called Patpong.  This here district of Bangkok is where all the westerners come to party, and where many gorgeous Thai girls drastically drop their standards, in hopes of landing a wealthy white man!

Being the curious individual that I am, I just had to see this craziness with my own eyes.

Bangkok, Thailand - Arnie in the tuk tuk
And as soon as I step foot in this place, I could immediately feel the ugliness of it all.

Slimy locals, both men and women, came up to Arnaud (and me, sometimes!!) asking if he was interested in seeing a show, etc . . .

And all around, it was pretty much the same thing.  Strip joints/bars, every 5 meters from one another, with loads of half-naked girls dancing around the poles, guys, or should I say "pimps," walking around, propositioning the westerners that inundated the place . . . a very happening yet sad place, if you ask me.

One of the things that still has me confused about our night out in Patpong . . . why were there families there with their children??!!!  What were they thinking?

Yeah, let’s all go out for some ice cream, kiddos, and then we can make a quick stop at the strip joint before returning to the hotel!!  ¡¡Una locura!!

I guess, when tourists want to get in some bargain shopping during their trip, anything goes .

Bangkok, Thailand - Wat Intharawihan & its Golden Standing Buddha
. .

Yes, in addition to the strip bars, there were also stands with all sorts of things for sale, from various cheap articles of clothing, to bargain-priced cultural souvenirs.  Go figure!!

You can have it all in Patpong, a cheap pole dance or why not buy a nice swim suit, while you’re at it?!!! :(

Fortunately, this night-out only happened once, and so, our memory of Thailand and it’s capital remained pretty positive.

With that said, off we go for more fun adventures in Thailand!!

Bangkok, Thailand - Wat Intharawihan

On allait peut être voir donc des combats de coqs, un combat de boxe Thaï, des insectes à vendre dans les marchés, les « Tuk-Tuk » qui font la course, l’odeur du « pad thaï » (qui signifie d ailleurs : riz frit) a tous les coins de rue ;

Bangkok, Thailand - The Golden Standing Buddha at Wat Intharawihan

Bangkok, Thailand - Buddhist monk at Wat Intharawihan

Bangkok, Thailand - A worshipper at the feet of the Standing Buddha at Wat Intharawihan

Bangkok, Thailand - Gimme a BIG smile!!!

Bangkok, Thailand - Images of Wat Intharawihan
