On the plus side, we did end up seeing a lot of animals. We saw all four types of monkeys native to Costa Rica (Spider, Howler, Squirrel, and white-throated Capuchin). We also got to see a poison dart frog. Even though it didn't feel like we were in the rain forest, I'm glad we got to see all these types of animals.
The surf itself was pretty good too. We ended up going to Matapalo point, which was basically the only place where waves were breaking. The set waves were about a foot or two overhead. There were a group of Israeli surfers there, and although it felt a bit crowded, the vibe was fairly mellow. After an hour or so, a few local groms came out and started dropping in on most of the waves and things got a bit more competitive, which ruined the fun, especially since we came to Costa Rica to escape that kind of attitude. Paddling back in was a bit tricky because the tide came up and the rocky outcrops where we had entered the water from were now covered by water!
