I went from Basel's airport to their train station, where (all in German) I got a ticket to Kaiserslautern. It wasn't direct, I had to change in Mannheim, but that's fine. If there's one thing I'm used to, it's the German train system. It was a pretty easy walk to the hotel, where I got directions to the stadium. I had a US National team shirt on under my coat, so I was in spirit too! It took a while to get through security, they were doing intros by the time I got to my seat. I was on the end...and the aisle next to me was blocked off.
I recognized a few names for the Polish team, and just about all of them for the US. Especially TT and Deuce (Taylor Twellman and Clint Dempsey). Clint ended up getting the only goal of the game. It started to snow into the game and got so bad they had to bring out a special yellow ball so it can be seen! Clint met the turf pretty often, and I kept muttering how he needed to stop doing that.
I got a few pictures, but I was too far away for any really good shots. It ended up being a really good game with plenty of American, Polish and German fans in attendance. I spent a night in Kaiserslautern before leaving for Rothenburg, the city of so many memories.
