th April: Took the bus to Rio Serrano (Park Admin) to start the walk with Andrew (pom with the same plans who I met in Puerto Natales). Got to Camp Italiano in the middle of the W toute on the first day. It started raining about 10 minutes into the walk and that was to set the scene for the next 3 days!
th April: After my tent got flooded at Italiano and having crazy winds batter us down Valle Frances, we headed back to Refugio Pehoe to take refugio from the weather. It was pretty crowded with other people with the same idea! My camera's screen/viewfinder was a casualty of the night at Italiano and is responsible for some ill composed photos form now on!
th April: Day trip to Glacier Grey miradoor. Just caught a glimpse of it but 60 knot head winds and rain made it difficult! Back to the refugio for goon (box wine) with a growing crowd of Australians.
th April: Took the boat to the east side of Lago Pehoe and bussed to Hosteria Las Torres to start the walk up to Campmento Torres with Andrew and an Oz couple Andrew (Melb) and Sarah (Tas). Had our first glimpses of sunlight and some great views of Rio ascensio.
th April: Got up to the Torres lookout at 7am after an early start for an almost perfect sunrise at the Torres. Saw all shades of colour from pink to yellow and it made the discomfort of the previous crap weather worthwhile. Continued on a 5 hour walk to refugio Los Cuernos with Andrew, stopping at Hosteria Las Torres to pick up our previously staged food drop.
th April: Day trip up Valle Frances from Cuernos. Weather wasn't perfect but the views were pretty stunning. It's like walking into an oversized football stadium except for the hanging glaciers periodically dropping chunks of ice down the sides of the cliffs. No wind all day which was eerie after the howling wind on the previous days.
th April: 3 hour walk back out to Hosteria Los Torres to take the bus back to puerto Natales and a good feed of parrilla (grill).
