Today was my first non-travel day in almost a week. Ieva was able to show me more of Kaunas - the river, downtown, Kaunas Castle, and old abandoned church (the way they say abandoned in Lithuanian translates to 'lost' which is kind of interesting). We walked by a church by the river where some couple was getting married, they had an old Чаика, which is a Soviet era car, really neat looking. We also walked out where two rivers join, which was very beautiful. We ate lunch at a restaurant which had a theme of Lithuania from a few centuries ago (when I came back to LT about six months later, I discovered that there are many Lithuanian restaurants with just such a theme). Cold beet root soup, made with sour milk, is popular in the Balto-Slavic region (well, the parts I visited anyway). I still haven't quite gotten a taste for it, but I think I will eventually. Later we had dinner at Avilys (which translates as "honeycomb") where they brew their own beer (alus).
A fairly relaxed and easy going day ... oh and she had a washing machine!
