Yangshou to Beijing..... contrasts of China....HARLEY DAVIDSON

Beijing Harley-Davidson

We are sadly leaving the wonderful, friendly, green area of Yangshou to return to busy, noisy, crowded Beijing.   We were in Yangshou so long the vendors recognised us and stopped to talk.   Several restaurants knew us and spoiled us when we came in.....  back to being annonomous...   sigh. ......    our departure airport is Beijing. so there is no getting around it.   We either have to leave or talk our three adult daughters into coming to live with us in Yangshou ...  (it might not take that much work to convince them if they see the pictures!)    We took a taxi from Yangshou to Guilin and flew out from there.   The taxi ride was exciting: much of the road is dug up and is rutted dirt in the guilin area.

There were fruit stands selling fruit and other road side business' as we drove by.  We saw a huge herd of ducks.  We had to stop.  I'll bet there were 1000 or more!   It was amazing to see them.   A waddling sea of ducks.....

Back in Beijing we again stayed at the Beijing international.  We arrived hot and tired and couldn't decide on a place to eat.  Complicated by the fact that we were hungry.... (go figure....)  we finally stopped at a Mcdonald's.  Pretty good food when you are starving and barely speaking.   By the time I got desert  (a taro pie!) I was very happy.   The next day we went to a grocery store and took pictures of the food.  the most amusing thing in the world was that they had hold peking ducks fully cooked hanging by their necks on sort of a shoe tree looking thing.

The food was boxed in such cute wrappers...   I was also really impressed by the variety of beers offered.  lechee beer,  orange beer, and pineapple beer.....

We went to the Pearl Market and got some jewelry...(third floor only because we are cheaper)  david picked up a 32 gig sony USB flash drive.   He bought 2 @ $20.00 each.  They worked and it came out they were worth about $300 but he didn't know that at the time.  bummer.

We also drove to the Harley Davidson store.  It is new and really wonderful!   We bought several shirts and met the General Manager: Hollis Zhao.  The address for the dealership (which has only been open since April 2007) is  no.

We went home on the 24th:  my dates got screwed up here but really: you can take my word that we are home again.   Very uneventful trip:  except that our very last leg of the flight got cancelled.  We discovered that we could visit the lounge of the airline for only a few dollars and eat and drink "on them" all day after we paid the fee.  So even the "bad" turned out to be interesting and good.   We can hardly wait to go back to China again.....  maybe 2009.

David and I do not have Motorcycles but we told my brother we would go to the Harley shop and buy him a tee-shirt. The little side trip came out to be one of the highlights of our Beijing experience. The sales girls were so sweet and attentive. They helped us look through the racks of shirts for one I wanted (it said Beijing and had a blue dragon on the back) although they were certain none were available. (yes we found one: it was huge but I bought it and it is my brother's favorite) The general manager came out and spoke to me: I shook his hand and told him I recognised him by the picture on the counter. He was very nice and posed for pictures with us. He gave us some key rings along with the shirts I purchased. When we left it was like leaving family. They could not have been nicer.

Sylvia, thank you for your kind comment : ) I think that your trip to the "Harley" store was cute. We have so much fun around our area watching "Harley" owners ride around Chattanooga on Sundays usually. It is fun BECAUSE usually the age group of owners is at least 50 plus. People in other countries may not realize that most United States citizens are not rich. They work for years to get to the place where they can own a "Harley Davidson". :) The "Harleys' are sold only four or five miles from our place. We bought our little Yorkie who weights about six pounds a "Harley" tee shirt. He LOVES it! I will have to take his photo and post it for you. You have a sparkling personality by the way. ANN
