All of this beauty and only an hour's drive out of TOWN??

Went to the family cabin about an hour's drive out of town up here in Alaska. What a blast! Everyone was riding dirt bikes or 4-wheelers. My cousin and I ventured up the highway about 10 miles away from the cabin (which is in a pretty secluded area) and I saw some of the most amazing views I had never seen in my life.
I moved up here about 3 years ago from Los Angeles, so all the skyline I ever saw was smog-ridden and full of buildings. To see what I've seen these past couple of years is such a privilege. I never knew places like this on earth still existed ... and that is pure beauty, untouched by development, vastness as far as the eye can see.... It is simply breathtaking.
On our way back to the cabin, we detoured to the river ... and my cousin MADE ME drive the 4-wheeler through the river. This freaked me out at first, of course, because I was imagining me flipping over in the water or sinking the 4-wheeler. But, the trick was to find the shallow spots, keep your hand on the gas and drive without hesitation until you reach the shore. This had to have been the most fun I've had in a while!
The weekend was full of activity and excitement. Did I mention my uncles were trying to out-do each other on who could shoot the most squirrels? Yeah... gross.
Dirt-biking, 4-wheeling, squirrel-shooting (haha!) ... and all this from a city girl!
