New Year's Day. New Year's Eve in Warsaw was a lot of fun - there are huge parties throughout the city - one big one in front of the Palace of Culture and Science looked like it must have been great. In my case I went to a party with a bunch of other expats - people from Portugal, Denmark, Spain... and many nice Polish people too. At midnight I was told to get up on a chair and "jump" into the New Year! This was different - we'll see how 2008 goes! This was interesting because as we jumped into the new year (advice of my Danish friends) we also were eating 12 grapes (one for every toll as the clock struck 12! - for my Spanish friends!) So, I did all of the recommended rituals to bring me some good luck for the coming year! Even drank some Russian sparkling wine! Right around midnight there were tons of fireworks and firecrackers going off which was nice - we went out to the street and watched - there were people everywhere! After a fun party the evening before, the logical thing to do would be to sleep late and spend time with family and friends - inside.
So, we took a drive from Warsaw, through Konstancin to Góra Kalwaria, through the forest. The countryside here is pretty at any time of the year, but the forests look pretty desolate now, without most of the leaves and white with snow. At one point, between Góra Kalwaria and Konstancin we stopped and walked through the forest for a while. It was a nice way to start a new year.
