A Drive along the Vistula
The problem with winter here is the lack of hours of daylight to be able to get out and see things, especially with teenagers who are very hard to wake up in the morning!!!
But, I had the days between Christmas and New Year's off, so I decided to do some exploring by car. One place that really suprised me is Plock - about a 45 minute drive from Warsaw, on the banks of the Vistula. I'd never seen a semi-frozen river before - an interesting sight! But even more suprising is the sound it makes as the pieces of ice caught in the stronger current drag against the ice closer to the edges. It was a cold, crisp day, and once we got out of the city it was even somewhat bright and you could see some blue in the sky which is really nice after a few weeks of varying shades of gray.
Our first stop was at a town called Czerwinsk nad Wisla. This town has a 12th century abbey which is considered one of the most important examples of romanesque architecture in Poland. We wandered around this church for a while and took some pictures. The setting is beautiful, on a bluff overlooking the river.
From there we drove to Plock, which has a really nice town square. There is a large ice skating rink there and it was a nice winter scene, watching the skaters and looking at the pretty buildings surrounding the square.
