Pictures from my three months of living in Athens Greece, side trips to Aegina and Santorini (also Cairo and Barcelona). Studied at City University downtown, lived in Illisia, embraced being a foreign local. Hellas for always.

OPA!

I spent nearly the entire early and late afternoon searching for a dress. I had brought skirts and nice tops that would be appropriate for going out to a club or something. But I had nothing that was right to join our entire group with Aphrodite for dinner and traditional Greek dancing at the Kalokerinos Tavern. We met in the square of Monastiraki with Aphrodite, all dressed in our finest, lit by the light of the Acropolis at dark.

We had some fantastic food, a plate of appetizers (stuffed grape leaves, moussaka, fried cheese, something else I can't remember), souvlaki and greek potatoes for the main course, and honey cakes for dessert. The place is definitely for tourists as the live entertainment presents different Greek dances from several of the cities and islands of Greece.
It is a very long show but definitely fun and entertaining. The food is brought out at a leisurely pace, but not where you are wondering what is taking so long. You pretty much get the wine and food as you are enjoying the Greek dancers. There is fire dancing, drums, bellydancing, and even some dance offs. They bring up people from the dining area to join them as well. There are some points where the entire restaurant is up on stage! Lots of groups make this a place to stop, as we were not the only "tourists" there. I say tourists that way because while we were living there, at this point it had only been for a week or so.

Perhaps some of the best entertainment of the night was when people from our group were brought up on stage. Adam, our basketball jock of the group, was challenged to a "dancing duel" which was pretty entertaining.
However, it couldn't hold a candle to when the boys were all brought up on stage by the bellydancer...and by this point in the show several of them had downed many glasses of wine, which only added to the hilarity of the evening. The male dancer was doing a solo thing and came to one of our girls who was sitting by the edge of the stage and had her touch the pom-pom on the edge of his shoe (I really have no idea what the shoe pom-poms are for, but apparently its traditional!) and he acted like he was getting all turned on, lifting up his skirt and fanning himself (yes, I said skirt). It was our first official night of saying "OPA!" And yes...there even was some plate breaking! All in all the night made for good food, good company, and great entertainment.

If you are looking for some traditional touristy Greek things check it out!
