Pictures from my three months of living in Athens Greece, side trips to Aegina and Santorini (also Cairo and Barcelona). Studied at City University downtown, lived in Illisia, embraced being a foreign local. Hellas for always.

And MARCH and MARCH and MARCH...

changing of the guard
Go see the changing of the guard at Parliament! Syntagma Square (did you Syntagma means "constitution" in Greek?) is a pretty cool place to grab some coffee or some kind of dessert or just sit on a park bench and people watch...but make sure you see the changing of the guard.

I'm not gonna lie, it seems pretty silly after you see if a couple times (and living there for three months we saw bits and pieces of it pretty much every week as it was on the way to school) but the first time you're too in awe of where you are to think how silly it looks. The guards, who we were told are the tallest and best looking young men in the Greek military (and I met a guy at Starbucks who had done it during his year of service and...I won't argue with that statement! haha), have some pretty crazy outfits. They're traditional, although I haven't quite figured out what the pom-poms on the shoes are for!

A bit of advice...if you're walking down the left side of Vassilious Sofias towards parliament you need to be aware...if you hear any loud marching MOVE! The guards start their march toward parliament all the way back from Alexandrou, and they will run you over. Not lie, it is not a joke! They will run you over and they will not talk to you. Believe me, my friend tried. And he did talk, and he said he could get fined like crazy for talking! Hm, guess at 1am he just didn't care! :-)
