Well what can we say except that we want to go back, we loved it and it is AMAZING!
We had 5 days and managed to pack in so much...We started off on Ipanema beach (which is the area of Rio we were staying in) - all I can say is it was a stunning beach. In the afternoon we went on a favela tour. This was fascinating as we were taken to Rocinha, the biggest favela in Rio with more than 120000 residents. There were police at the edges of the favelas but they didn't go in as inside the favelas it is run by the druglords not the police! They have look out boys on the perimeter with walky talkies and fireworks which they set off to warn the others at any sign of police.
On Friday we woke to a beautiful, clear blue sky and sun so decided this was the perfect day to go handgliding. We were really nervous but the feeling once you were in the sky was amazing with perfect views over Rio and the beach where we had to land. That evening we headed up sugar loaf to watch sunset and view the city by night.
Saturday morning we slept in but then got up and headed out to Santa Theresa, another district in Rio. Here we caught a tram up the hill ad then walked down through the lane which had lovely views of Rio. There were lots of little shops and cafes along the way back.
On Sunday we got up early to go to the mosteiro sao Bento. We watched mass and the monestery had the most amazing wooden carved walls and 18th century organ.
Monday was our last full day and we decided to make the most of it so got up at 5am to watch the sunrise from the rock outcrop on Ipanema beach. Absolutely stunning sunrise and then walked back across the beach paddling in the waves. We headed up to Corcovado - the Christ staue that morning and saw more amzing view over
On our last day we were all packed so headed to the infamous Copacabana beach to people watch and get a bit of sun. So sad to leave to come home but it has been a fantastic 11 weeks into which we have done so much. See you all soon xxx
