500 West Hotel is known in San Diego as the YMCA, as it is, indeed, the old Navy YMCA (as the label on the front of the building says it). It has been refurbished lately, and self-described as a hybrid hotel.
Well, this hostel is quite nice, I mean, don't expect too much, but the rooms are clean (but small), shared bathrooms are also very clean, people are friendly and you will most likely make new friends in the shared kitchen or smoking a cigarette outside. However this is not a true youth hostel, so don't expect parties, gatherings or any social events organised by the hostel.
Price is ok, compared to other accomodations in San Diego which tend to be on the pricey side, 69$ a night is ok. Location is also very convenient, on Broadway St., near the marina, a few blocks away of Gaslamp neighbourhood, and with favourites bus and trolley lines in front of the building (airport, old town, Tijuana).
