We woke up at 6:30 for a quick breakfast of all Chinese food--hard boiled eggs, rice, noodles, and some kind of green cucumber-like vegetable. We didn’t try some of what we called UFPs (unidentified food products). We got our first lady cab driver and asked for the metered rate. She said no and showed us some official looking papers to convince us this was the standard fare for a ride to the airport. We paid 110 RMB for a 45 minute drive with a 10 RMB toll that she paid. Beth gave her 6 RMB extra, probably for the cause of female solidarity.

We had a smooth flight during which we watched a cartoon video showing a line of ants streaming into a kitchen to get food. Each ant picks up what looks like an ant-sized rice krispie treat, turns, and marches back. The last ant in the line looks up, sees a bowl of bananas, and abandons the rice krispie treat in favor of the large fruit.

He climbs the counter to the fruit bowl and pushes out a banana. He struggles to drag it along but then it falls into the sink getting stuck in the drain. He goes for another banana, which splats on the floor. He keeps trying, but each banana is lost. Next he eyes a pineapple on the table and glances back and forth between this tempting fruit and his original option before finally picking up a rice krispie treat and marching off. The moral of the story seems to be that non-conformity doesn’t pay. Beth wasn't buying it … she said she would go for the banana every time.

When we landed in Chongqing, we had to pick up our luggage, get new boarding passes for Lijiang, and go through security again just like starting a new flight.

Our experience getting boarding passes thus far had been get in a line, wait to speak to an agent, get directed to a different counter, wait again, get directed to another counter, etc. until eventually reaching the right counter. This time when we reached the right counter Beth broke the code. She noticed that the first 2 letters of the flight identifier matched letters over the ticket counter so she guessed this was a carrier ID.

On the second flight, they played American cartoons of Yogi Bear and Boo Boo. One episode depicted a “greedy capitalist” who wanted to cut down trees without concern for frog-mouthed turtle habitat. The greedy capitalist was aided by a politician who said he just cares about power. Of course they didn’t get away with it; Yogi Bear saved the day.

While exiting the airport, we looked for a sign with our name on it but didn’t see one, so we jumped on a shuttle to Lijiang.

Where we found Tiger Leaping Gorge tour
The road to Lijiang was under construction so it was bumpy and dusty. We noticed it was much sunnier, cooler, drier and higher here. We forgot to write down our hotel name and address in Chinese so we spent 3 hours searching for our hotel. Why it took 3 hours is a long story, which I’ll summarize with 2 points: (1) the English name of a hotel, like “Old City Bamboo Park Hotel” may sound nice to tourists but have nothing to do with the actual Chinese name (2) people misdirect you to other hotels rather than helping you find the place where you have a reservation. We finally found it inside the walls of the old city of Lijiang. The lady at the registration desk was sorry we had so much trouble and gave us a free upgrade to a suite. We had planned to start hiking the Tiger Leaping Gorge in the morning but the delay had put us behind.

We tried to get information but were still uncertain about “little” details such as where to start and how to find our way along the trail. It was looking like we would have to delay our hike but luckily we found out about a group of young people at a nearby youth hostel who were going to Tiger Leaping Gorge in the morning. So we walked to the youth hostel and signed up.
