Puli (Hungarian Water Dog) sculpture. Smithsonian Folklife Festival 2013. Hungarian Heritage: Roots to Revival.

I looked forward to this year's annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall. The 2013 edition would have Hungary as the featured country. That meant lots of good music, costumes, and food! Oh, and lots and lots of photos! We went on Friday and I went again on Saturday. (The Smithsonian invited me to join its Flickr group Photowalk through the Festival.)  The dancing was great! The best I've seen at a festival. Solo dancing and couples dancing galore. The men demonstrated incredible leaps and air time in their dances! One even jumped over his partner! The craftspeople demonstrated Hungarian cooking, musical instrument making, embroidery, weaving, and horn carnving.

Nothing as dramatic as the dancing cars from Colombia or the Voladores from Mexico in years past, but the central figures of a Peakcock Tower and a Puli Dog were very attractive.

In addition, the festival featured two other themes: One World, Many Voices (music and peoples representing lesser-known languages around the world) and The Will to Adorn.

The food. I tried Chicken Paprika and Kolbász (Hungarian Sausage) from the Budpest Bistro tent. Also Chicken Mole Tacos at A Taste of the Americas. Kind of bland this year. Not like the food I had in Budapest! The soft tacos were the best.

Still, another great folklife festival from the Smithsonian!

This sounds wonderful! I'll have to make it a point to visit with marcel next summer! He would have loved to see the Hungarian traditions!

There was Goulash but it was very soupy and not like the Goulash I've enjoyed in Hungary. I've been to the Folklife Festival each year since 2008. Bhutan, Wales, Mexico, and Colombia have been among the recent featured countries. Please see my individual Folklife Festival journal entries in this blog each past year for more details and photos. It's always an event!

Interesting to note that Hungary was the featured country at this festival. I was in Hungary 3 times and enjoyed all my visits. Didn't they have Hungarian ghoulash at the Budapest Bistro. Also, do you know which other countries have been featured in the past?
