Is Buenos Aires safe?
May 21, 2006
With last week's rape of a girl near our residencia, a question weighing on all our minds is how safe our city really is? Winn already had a girl unzipping his backpack and going through it on our way to class. He also had a watch stolen. I think Hannah had her watch stolen as well. Dillon had a guy come up to him and literally grab his 'agua sin gas' glass bottle [in broad daylight at a cafe] and try to steal his mac laptop. There has been additional other incidents that I've heard too. We've only been here a week! Granted most of us scream, "I'm an American..rob me!" I think the number of collected incidents for the first week is a high~ Here's a great article I found from the New York Times: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=travel&res=9C0CE4DD173AF937A15755C0A966958260&n=Top%2fFeatures%2fTravel%2fDestinations%2fCentral%20and%20South%20America%2fArgentina%2fBuenos%20Aires ..it asserts that the greatest danger in Buenos Aires is its crazy drivers! This I do not refute. I myself have been caught in the middle of the street, and I've seen it happen at least 3 times to fellow students. We should have a short conversation about it soon...I'm worried about my fellow students. Regarding material theft and sexual assault, I suppose the best and most effective counter is prevention... not walking alone, not flashing wealth in public places, locking up valuables, and simply using common sense will help to keep incidents minimal. Statistically and reportedly Buenos Aires is suppose to be one of the safest "large cities" there is. Lets hope that it owns up to the reputationa and we're able to get the most out of our month here =]
