Chicago Layover

Chicago Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

Once again, I venture forth on a trip around the USA via Amtrak. This time I head West and will travel through 17+ states. Having never been out West, looking forward to the scenery that only it can provide. First stop is Grand Junction, CO.

Chicago Layover

Arrived in Chicago on the Capitol Limited from Toledo, Ohio. The train was about 47 minutes late, which is lucky because the Lakeshore Limited, which follows an hour later, was 4 hours and 18 minutes late, due to a freight train derailment in Indiana the night before. The late arrival of the Lakeshore Limited caused my departure for Grand Junction to be 18 minutes late.

During my layover in Chicago, I had breakfast at Lou Mitchell's, one of my favorite restaurants. I will post a review later on. After breakfast, I walked down to Michigan Ave, the "Magnificent Mile".  I took several photos, including some of the Elevated Train, which I found out later that it is illegal to take photos of the trains, so I won't post any of those, but I will post one of a pigeon on the platform.

Went to Millennium Park where they have the Bean. The real name for this sculpture is the Cloud Gate. It was designed by Anish Kapoor, who is an Indian sculptor from Bombay. It cost $11.5 million dollars and is 66 feet long and weighs in at 110 tons. Makes nice photos, but then again, so does a $10 mirror from the drugstore.

Moving on down Michigan Ave, the Wrigley Building is always a favorite to photograph.

Lunch at Harry's Hot Dogs and then back to Union Station to board the California Zephyr headed for Grand Junction, Colorado and all points in between.
