The great wall!

Yehah! New country- new adventures! We arrived in Beijing and were instantly thrown into the crowds and life that is China. Jen, Martin, Johnny and I made our on the Metro and managed to find the hostel- thanks Martin! And then hit the streets. Red Lanterns, street food stalls and people everywhere. This place was alive! And best of all- it was a decent temperature outside! Over the next five days we had a great time seeing what we could- The Forbidden City, The Summer Palace, Tiamemen Square (and all the kites above it!) Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple, the Silk Markets, and best of all... the Great Wall. We saw parts of it coming in on the train which was great- but nothing compared to walking it. We drove 4 hours to get to our starting point-  Jinshangling.

From here it was a 3 1/2 hour trek along the Great Wall till we arrived at Simatai. And what a trek it was! It started off at a renovated, done up entrance point, and the furthur we walked along, the less of a wall it bacame! At some points we were walking along a raised, crumbling pathway with no walls, at a 70 degree angle. We were feeling it! The views were absolutely spectacular- better than we ever could have imagined. Amazing.

After feeling it was time to move on and make the most of this huge country, we planned our next stop- Datong. But this meant leaving our travel buddies for the last month- Jen and Martin. We had a farewell dinner in the courtyard, accompanied with the last of Jens vodka before seeing them off. Hopefully we will be meeting them in Lhasa for some Tibet adventures! So Johnny and I made our next move...

Yeah, I was at Simatai in late April, and it was definitely an amazing part of the Great Wall. I could see Jinshangling below, and it stretched for miles. Good for you to hike it!
