So we planned on getting an early start today to get going on the hike before it got to hot. That pretty much didn't happen. We woke up at around 11. When we woke up there were 3 people just arriving. They looked like we did the night before, the walk up the hill kicked they're butt too. They were from New York and were really nice. We decided to do the hike with them. We ended up getting started at maybe 1:00. We got some food and some water bottles. It was getting pretty warm out. The hike between the 1st 2 cities is very deceiving. It's really easy, but the rest of the hikes are not so much. A lot of uphill walking and the stairs are really rough and hard to walk on. But the views were amazing. We walked for quite a while after Manarola before getting to the next city.

first glimpse of vernazza

Corneglia was really small and we went to use the bathroom but there was no TP, so heres a hint..bring toilet paper on your walk. There were a lot of vines which I can only assume was for wine growing. It was really pretty though. The hike to Vernazza was deadly though, it was sooo long. Grueling. But Vernazza was gorgeous. We stopped there and Lori and I got some food at a little hole in the wall place. We met back up with the guys at the beach. I went swimming for a bit. The water was so nice, it was awesome swimming in the Mediterranean. So pretty. We spent some time there and relaxed before drying off and heading for the trail again. Lori and I got just far enough on the trail to realize there was no way we would be able to make it all the way to the next town.

we pretty much walked far enough to take this picture.
We took some pictures and then told the guys we'd meet them in Monterosso. We took the train there, a decision I don't regret in the slightest. Well, maybe just because I'd want to have some of that juice everyone kept telling us about. My favorite city though was Vernazza, Monterosso was really pretty but I liked the smaller towns better. We wandered around for a bit, watched some old Italian men lawn bowl and then went back to the train station.

We JUST missed the train back to Riomaggiore so we had to wait like 45 minutes for the next one. Oh well. I'm kind of glad because then we wouldn't have witnessed the most awesome couple ever. These 2 people were on a platform across from us. First they were awkwardly just hugging eachother, then I guess he must have said something wrong because they began to fight.

deadly stairs!
She kept pushing him away, at one point she actually slapped him. This went on for quite a while before he must have calmed her down because it ended with them making out pretty intensely. It was fun to watch that play out though.

We got back to Riomaggiore and went to our hostel and showered and changed and then the 5 of us went out for dinner. It was soo good. It was both of ours last night in Italy so they ordered 3 course meals. Lori and I were both cheap and only ordered one, but they still gave us some of their delicious seafood. It was so good, we waited for a bit so we could sit on the patio. It was a lot of fun, but I had a tough time eating mine because they were all in shells. I'm not very good at opening shells. But anywho, after that we went back to our hostel. Lori and I had each bought a bottle of wine, me red and her white.

leaving riomaggiore i think.
They had a bottle of tequila and a couple bottles of wine. Lori opened her 'wine' and it turned out there was a reason it was the only bottle of white wine in the store...it was champagne. I drank a lot of tequila. It was fun. We went back down to the town to wander around for a bit and then headed back up to the room. A lot of walking thats for sure. We sat and looked at the stars for a bit before heading to bed. We were off to Nice the next day.
