I'm in Chile for the semester finishing up my International Minor in Engineering (Latin America) by taking classes on Latin America's culture, music, history, etc. I'm also rapidly becoming more fluent in Spanish!

yay!

I got into Santiago this morning at 6 am and immediately was excited. The architecture here beats Concepcion's hands down! We checked into our hostel (Hostal de Sammy) and slept for a few hours. We're getting ready to go wander now, so more later.

More Later: We ended up walking to the Plaza O'Higgins where there's an amusement park (very random), through the Palacio Moneda (which has an outdoor art museum), and the commercial district where I admired all the shoe stores! After that we headed north and found out that there was a huge book fair going on, so we headed in and ended up meeting up with some Americans we knew who happened to be at the book fair too. The book fair was pretty intimidating, unfortunately all the books were expensive, so I didn't buy anything. To end the day we went to see Bourne Ultimatum, which was really good. To top off a great day the hostal is having a free spaghetti dinner!

I gave this hostel the rating that I think most people would give it; however, I think that it is one of those places that you either really like or don't like. The website lists all the important features, so all I have to add is this: if you want a peaceful place to relax Hostal Sammy is not for you. If you want to chat a lot and drink tons of beer, definitely check out Hostal Sammy. My only problem was with the organization of the hostel as the quality of personnel changes a lot depending on who is working. There were shifts when everything was really clean and shifts when the person on duty was sitting out on the patio drinking.
