A trip to the UP

A couple of weeks ago some friends (Marcin, Gretel, Tiffany, Sam) and I decided to do a weekend trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. First we wanted to go to Cancun for an extended weekend, but this did not work out as Gretel got a new Position in Germany and was short on time. So we fell back on camping and hiking near Lake Superior. We left Friday around 2pm with fantastic weather and a car packed to the top with food and equipment. The drive took us about 6 hours but we arrived before sunset and got the last space on the camp ground. After setting up the tents we started the fire to cook our late night dinner.
After a luxurious meal with grilled sweet potatoes, salad,
steak and sausages we enjoyed the starry sky with some Tequila and S'mores.

For all locations mentioned further down, have a look at Google Earth or at this very nice site.
The next day started with a hearty breakfast after which we started hiking along the Lakeshore Trail. After two or three miles we left the trail and went to the beach where we collected and skipped stones and had simply a good time. To get back to the camp side we decided to walk on the beach.
Back again we had a short snack and got into the car to drive to Miners Falls and Miners Castle. We enjoyed the fantastic weather and the beautiful landscape.
As we started our day pretty early we had a lot of time and saw also the Munising falls before we decided to drive back. But even now we had still a few hours of sunlight left and so we started another hike along the beach to Au Sable Lighthouse. The beach and the slowly setting sun as well as the multiple rock formations made up for the very annoying horse-fly.
Again our evening ended with a fire cooked dinner and watching out for falling stars on the beach.
Our last day started grey but we wouldn't let us bring down by that. So broke up camp had some leftovers for breakfast and started out for Tahquamenon Falls. After seeing the upper falls we went on to the lower ones and to our delight the sun came out again. We spent some time in this wonderful place and Gretel and Tiffany had a short bath in the river. I had this done already in the morning in Lake Superior (cold!). Then it was time to head home again, but we made the way more enjoyable through stopping multiple times for lunch, smoked salmon and ice cream.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the U.P. Munising is my hometown and I miss it like crazy some days! Lake Superior can be cold, but after a few years you get used to it. :) It looks like you enjoyed yourselves greatly and did all the things us locals do on a constant basis. Thanks for sharing!
