The "city" on the Island
August 15, 2007
Portree is about 30 miles from the entrance of Skye. It is the biggest village of the Island so maybe we can call it a city! Well, as there is more than one street (for a change !), it might as well be one. It is pleasant to go around Somerled Square and do some shopping (shopping, understand tourists shopping!).
Then, go down to the Pier and enjoy the sight of its colourful houses and the gorgeous view at the Bay.
Somewhere, hidden behind the free parking is a really good Indian restaurant: The Prince of India (tip: the indian is far better than the chinese right next to it if you ask my opinion!).
Hum, forgot to say: for those who likes to walk on beaches. Not the main bay where all the boats are but the bay on the other side, the first one you see when you arrive from the south of the island has a lot of nice views to offer. Need to go at low water when the water has left. You can park on the side of the road, just in front of the Aros Center, just before the cimetary. You will then again need your wellies 'cause the beach is quite muddy but it is worth a walk! The view you have from one side: the Black Cuillins and the other side, the town and the Old Man of Storr (that big rock independant from the mountain behind -the locals call it Viagra-!) are so worth it!
And that's it: you've spend a nice peaceful afternoon walking about and now you're full of that tasty indian food. Bet you'll sleep very well now!
