Rome....once the world's most powerful city.

Rome, along with Paris has to be one of the best sightseeing cities in Europe.

There is so much to see and do even apart from the famous sights, there is a surprise around evey corner. The city has over 400 churches, a number of fountains and loads of ruins to explore. Rome is the capital of Italy, as well as the country's largest city with more than 2.7 million residents .

We stayed in the area around the train station which was very handy to both the metro and the busses. We did the Open-top bus tour, Angels and Demons tour, The Vatican, The Coloseum, the Roman Forum and a river cruise among other things. The buildings and culture of Rome is unique and the city is easy to get around.

Rome - Wikipedia This site has lots of information on the city and has links to other useful sites.

After embarking on many Open Top bus tours in many cities including London, Paris and Barcelona, those cities with rivers usually include a river cruise with your bus ticket. Even thought the cruise was on the bus map the cruise was additional at €10 per person.

The boat which has glass windows and roof was very hot(although the windows were opened slightly)and the seats were quite crammed.

Due to flooding, a huge wall has been built on both sides of the river blocking out any views of the city and makes the river quite bland compared to others we have been on.
Basically all we saw on the cruise was wall, bridges and the odd homeless camp along the banks.

The commentary was first done in Itallian and then English and was very loud and just went on and on about the river and was not very interesting at all!

We eventually both fell asleep out of boredom!

We opted for the 48 hour ticket for €40 each which enabled us to use the bus for 2 days to get around the city.
You get a pair of earphones to plug in and hear the commentary (in 6 different languages) on your journey around the city. The bus stops relatively close to all the major tourist stops and you get a great view from the top as compared to ground level.

As there is only one line the bus follows, I would opt for the 24 hour ticket next time as when we discovered the metro we used that instead.
I wouls have also gone for the other bus company as their route was a lot better and had more stops that the one we went on.

If you go to Rome again I recommend the Roma Pass. It's €20 valid for 3 days, gets you into any 2 sites out of a list of 40 and is valid for buses and the metro.
