Ever want to have Christmas in the middle of the summer?

We visited Frankenmuth, Michigan, which is in the running to be the most beautiful town in the USA. Everything from the Polka-Hotel to the weather was PERFECT!

Cabela's Stop

Only 17 miles into Michigan, is this really cool outdoor store called Cabela's.  I'm usually only there for Christmas shopping, so it was odd to be there in the summer.  They had a big tent sale (that really wasn't much of a sale.)  Cabela's sells all things outdoor.  Think "Bass Pro Shop" only MUCH bigger and more selection.  We wandered around for a bit.  I LOVE the camping section.  I did purchase a book about drying foods and drooled over the multi-room tents that I think might have more living space than my house.  Dad picked up a nice jacket for only $15.  There are sales, you just need to look.  There's a cafe that sells things like ostrich and buffalo sandwiches if you're feeling like something different for lunch.  I wish I had taken the camera into the store (I say this every time but never want to lug it around) but they have very cool displays of animals.  It makes me sad that they killed all these animals (hunting is kind of the theme to the store), but they are very neat to see.  There’s this 2-story mountain in the middle of the store with a lake (real fish) and stuffed animals all over it (mountain lions, buffalo, wolves, birds, etc…)  Cabela’s a nice chance to stretch the legs before the second half of the trip on up to Frankenmuth.

Cabela’s is southwest of Detroit off U.S. Highway 23. The store sells quality and brand-name outdoor merchandise. The showroom is over 225,000 sq. ft. and has a décor of animal displays, huge aquariums and trophy animals interacting in realistic re-creations of their natural habitats. While the staff is very knowledgeable, the store is very hunting-based. I inquired about snorkel equipment and underwater cameras, and they looked at me like I was crazy because I didn’t want to kill and eat the animals I meet in the water! My favorite is the camping section. If you have any outdoorsmen in your life, this is the place for gifts. The selection is impressive. They have everything from guns, hunting equipment, ice fishing equipment, home décor, clothing, hunting technology, and more. If you’re on Route 23 in Southern Michigan, it’s worth the stop, if nothing else, to see the animal displays and try an ostrich burger. Café prices are a little high, but you get a lot of food for your dollar.
