Hong Kong bound
My friend Jacqui and her husband picked me up on their way to the airport for our flight across Bass Straight to Melbourne. Our flight departed Hobart at 18:10 and arrived into Melbourne at 19:20. Once in Melbourne we had a few hours to fill in before our 23:59 departure to Hong Kong. We went in search of our work colleagues and found some of them near the international departure check in counters. We learnt they had had a rough crossing on the flight before ours and one of the girls actually passed out on the flight and was really quite sick.
Well time finally rolled around and it was boarding time. On the plane, I had a window seat, with Jacqui next to me. I love the window seat, just me and my pillow and no one to crawl across my legs on the way to the bathroom waking me up every half hour.
No. It is I, who will wake them up. One of the movies I watched was ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ with Toni Collette and Greg Kinnear, what a lovely, funny movie.
I remember the first time I flew into Hong Kong, and flying between buildings so close you felt like you could reach out the window and grab some clothing that was hanging off one of the balconies of the tall buildings that line the flight path. This time things were not quite as exciting. The new airport however, has won several international “Best Airport” awards, so all is not lost.
Jacqui and I met up with Karen (the girl who had been sick earlier), we all made our way through customs, and while waiting for immigration we were comparing passport photos. Poor Karen won the award for ugliest passport photo in the history of passport photos. As we stepped up to the counter, the officer took a look at our photos and did a quick scan of our faces, he did a double take with Karen, looking at her face, then back at the photo, back to Karen, he eventually decided it was the same woman. Karen turned to us and said, “he’s thinking “You very, very ugry rady.””
We found the counter selling Octopus cards and all bought one for our transportation needs while in Hong Kong. We then headed off following the signs to the train station, and the train that would take us to Kowloon. I enjoyed the train ride, such beautiful clean trains (take note Sydney Rail), and it is always exciting to be in a new city for the first time.
Jacqui and I were in a room to together and Karen was sharing with another girl on a different floor, so we headed to our rooms to unpack and meet up later in the foyer to head out and get acquainted with this stunning city. First stop, The Ladies Market (I know, I really do have to see someone about my problem). We walked all the way from our hotel to the market, as some bright spark said it was “just up the road”, and over an hour later, not including the stop for a meal on the way, we finally made it. Yeah! Time to shop...
