Off the see the Penguins
There was not much happening in Bridport, so we took off for the East coast. Along the way, we saw a sign for a St Columba Falls and decided to take a side trip for a hike in another lush rainforest.
St Columba Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in Tasmania. The cascading waters plunge nearly 90m from the Mt Victoria foothills to the valley of the South George River. The catchment area of over 4000 ha guarantees a continuous flow of water down the granite cliff face. The falls are stunning and the lush valley you go through to get to them is magical.
Back on the road again, this time to Bicheno where we had a booking at dusk with the Bicheno Penguin & Adventure Tours to see the Fairy Penguins in their natural habitat. The tour gave us the rare chance to see these lovely little penguins emerge from the ocean and head for their homes in a private rookery along the beach of Bicheno.
Our accommodation for the night is the Greenlawn Cottage, a self-contained cottage with another wood fire and complimentary homemade shortbread and chocolates, gotta love this Tasmanian hospitality.
