Every year the Australian Antarctic Division celebrates the winter solstice by holding a midwinter festival. During the weeklong celebrations, there is much to do and see, including the ‘Longest Night Film Festival’, tours on the Aurora Australis and much more.
I met one of my friends and her two children at the Huskies Picnic on the final day of the festival to watch sled races (without snow), ice sculpting, a myriad of performers and what everyone wanted to do, meet the huskies.
What beautiful dignified animals the huskies are. There were blue-eyed ones and brown-eyed ones; pure white, white with grey and many more, they are just gorgeous animals and we all enjoyed patting their beautiful thick fur,
The last performance for the day was the magnificent Taiko drummers. These mesmerising performers played for about fifteen minutes and had the whole audience captivated.
Today was a very enjoyable day and if you happen to be in Hobart at this time of the year, I highly recommend you spend some time in the Botanical Gardens for the celebrations.
