Drive through Bavaria
November 21, 1992
Drove with Tracie and Alan south from Kitzingen through Munich and stayed at the AFRC Lake Hotel on Chiemsee, a beautiful lake in southern Bavaria. The AFRC Lake Hotel was the first Rasthaus built by Adolf Hilter as a recreational stop on his newly planned Autobahn system back in 1939. Now operated by the American military as a army recreational retreat, this is a very comfortable hotel with sweeping views of the lake and of Herreninsel, a large island in the center of the lake. It has a kind of hunting lodge feel to it, very warm and relaxed. Lots of foreign students find seasonal work and dormitory housing to stay in. We had some dinner, drank some good German Bier, played the slots, and prepared for our visit to Schloss Herrenchiemsee the next day.

The original hotel on the lakeshore is now closed; however, you can still stay just across the road in the hotel's annex.
