Byodoin Temple

We visited the Byodoin Houdou Temple, as depicted on the back of the 10 yen coin. Unfortunately we were not able to photograph the internal Amida Buddha statues and other workings inside the Central Phoenix Hall. It is amazing how well the ukiyo-e paintings as well as the entire temple's structure has been preserved throughout the last thousand of years.  We've also toured the museum in which we took our time to tour in the cool shade. A video guide interpreted the history of the Byodoin temple in English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The Jodo-skiki garden, accompanied with a large picturesque pond was also a memorable experience.

As for Uji city itself, I wasn't really drawn to the commerce outside the matcha and green tea stores that were consolidated outside the temple. As an eater, there wasn't much variety outside matcha-soba noodles, and anko (sweet beans). The city of Uji likes to keep things traditional.
