Ok...so I debated about whether I wanted to make any mention of Culebra. It is the coolest place and I don't want anyone else going there, but I guess in all fairness I'll tell the truth. I fell in love with the beach, the people, the relaxed attitude, and even the warm breezy air. This is the kind of place where you do what you want when you want to, and nobody gives a shit otherwise! You catch a 2 hour ferry from Fajardo
to Culebra. The ferry costs $2.25 USD - by far the cheapest ticket to paradise! As you arrive you enter a small port that is usually pretty chaotic when a ferry is coming and going. When there is no ferry, it is as dead as can be. We stayed at the first hotel we saw right in front of the ferry dock called Hotel Kokomo.
Me and some new friends
Our small (and air conditioned) room was inexpensive and a great location, right in the center of Dewey. During the summer there are less visitors so stores and restaurants may or may not be open all of the time. If you meet the right people, you'll find the places to party and mingle with the locals (many of whom are expats from all over the world). Our last night there started off as few cervezas and turned into a wild party on Playa Flemenco that lasted until the sun rised. This of course, is the worst idea if you plan to take the 6AM ferry back to Fajardo or have an 11AM check-out time from your hotel. With a little change in plans and very little sleep, we ended up catching a later ferry and managed to get kicked out of hotel promptly at 11 in the middle of the deepest and best 4 hour sleep of my life! Oh, but the best part about Culebra is Playa Flemenco. It is the most beautiful beach, with soft white sand and crystal clear turquoise water. I hear the snorkeling is fantastic...though I didn't try for fear of post-drunk drowning. Nevertheless it was an awesome time with good people and lots of sun!
