In at the deep end!

Today we properly started our diving course. We had to set the alarm (which was a bit traumatic) and get to school for 9am. It was a bit too much like going to work, but we managed it!
We spent the morning going through the theory with Klaus our instructor, watching the remaining video and doing some tests. It was all pretty relaxed but some of the theory was quite technical at first so we really had to concentrate! Think we got it in the end!
In the afternoon we went to put the theory into practice. We thought we would be doing all this in a swimming pool, as all the videos had led us to believe this was what happened. But no, after lunch we got onto a very 'rocky' long boat (with many other divers) and sailed out to the diving boat in the deeper water. We then sailed off to a dive sight further around the island. We were a little worried about this as neither of us had dived before, but we needn't have been. Once we had kitted up (the air tanks that you put on your back are incredibly heavy - making standing up straight a major task, especially when the boat starts rocking too - but once in the water you hardly know its there) and jumped in we swam to near to the beach where we could almost stand up. Once settled we started to practice some skills. Things such as filling and emptying your mask, swimming with no mask, using alternative air sources and floating under water. All of which we seemed to master ok, although Emma did get a little stressed with the mask skills and rapidly swam to the top with a nose full of water a couple of times! We spent about 2 hours under the water and it was fantastic, we didn't do much swimming around (that will come tomorrow) but it was a fantastic feeling being able to breathe underwater without worry.
We got back to land at about 6pm. It had been a long day and we were knackered so after an hour in an internet cafe we quickly had a shower, had some food and went to bed to do our homework! It really is a hard life!
