Raglan

We got up early and were out of the hotel by 8.30am, we had many jobs to do today - mainly washing - we had both totally run out of our limited supply of clothes.  Emma got a well needed haircut whilst waiting for washing - much better than Diane's experience of foreign hairdressers!

Raglan is a really good place, it has a really friendly feel to it and we both would have liked to spend some time here, the problem is that most paces in New Zealand have that feel to it, so we would have to move on.  We spent the morning around the town and on the beach before leaving at lunchtime.  It was another really humid day and we had at least another three hours drive ahead of us.  The drive took us through some really green scenery, parts of which looked like the Yorkshire Dales.

We arrived in National Park Village at about 4pm, it wasn't quite what we were expecting, not much here really apart from lots of lodges.  Appartently we should be having good views of the three Volcanoes but it was misty so we couldn't see anything.  This is the area where a lot of 'Lord of the Rings' was filmed, particularly the evil parts, Mordor etc - maybe we will get to see it all if the mist clears!  We booked in for 2 nights as tomorrow we hope to do the 17km Tongirairo Crossing, supposedly one of the best day walks in New Zealand, the weather however isn't looking good so we won't know until the morning whether we get to do it or not.  We spent the evening chatting with a couple from Bolton who have spent 7 months in New Zealand, now that would be nice!
