Monks at a market

Today being Sunday we thought we would take it easy!  After breakfast and a read of the Bangkok Post we got in a tuk tuk to the bus station to purchase our ticket for tomorrow to the Laos border.  Our friendly tuk tuk driver then dropped us back off where we wanted to be - no weird diversions!  He told us that there was the Sunday Markets today so we went to have a look.  We soon discovered that Sunday Market day was a huge thing in Chiang Mai.  Many stalls were just in the process of being set up for later on, but it looked like half the town had been closed to traffic for the hundreds of stalls.  By 6pm it was very busy and once again there was a great atmosphere.  There were loads of food stalls, art and craft stalls, and musicians lining the streets.  The problem with Thai markets is that the stuff they sell is so good - we want to buy everything - but we wouldn't be able carry it, we are very jealous of those on a 2 week package holiday!

We didn't eat at the markets - we are still at a stage of being careful what we eat - it will soon pass!  Instead we went to a restaurant we have seen in the lonely planet and had a very good meal.

After some beer and food we went to haggle the markets, Diane purchasing a bag for 1 pound and a purse for 40p.  Now thats not bad!
