Gold
Yesterday we travelled from Melbourne to Bendigo on the train. The heat as we stepped onto the platform was the first thing we noticed, with a warm breeze it was very unlike the cool weather we had in Melbourne.
Bendigo is in the centre of Victoria and was built on the back of the goldmining rush in the 1800's. Many of the buildings on the main street are grand 19th Century buildings giving it a more prosperous air than many towns of similar size. It has the second largest gold mine in Australia and the deepest mineshafts anywhere in the world, some going down as far as 1000m.
Today the temperature was very hot, we spent the morning at the hostel before having a little wander into the town. We walked through Rosalind Park and called in at the information centre so we could decide what to do tomorrow. By this time the temperature had reached 38 degrees so we were fit for nothing except to read and remain very still.
