The Patuxai

We arrived in the capital yesterday after a short but interesting bus journey.  When we got on the bus we thought there were no seats left - but we don't have Lao vision!  Emma squeezed onto the last seat on the back row, Diane was put on the foldup drivers mate's chair, next to the driver.  At first it looked like we had the worst seats on the bus - until the plastic chairs came out and people were put in the aisle!  Health and safety is obviously in its early stages in Laos.  The journey was ok though and Diane had a great view of all the dodgy overtaking and avoidance of water buffalo!

We checked into a decent guest house and then went in search of the only VISA atm in Laos, with drew a million and then went back to cool down.

In the evening we found a fantastic Italian - L'Opera, where we treated ourselves to a bottle of wine and a superb meal.  At 35 pounds it was extremely expensive for Laos but we thought it was great value!

Today we had a walk around the morning markets which were huge.  The food section looked and smelled very dodgy but it was obviously a popular place for the locals.  Next onto the Patuxai - a huge struture which resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.  We climbed to the top and got some good views of the city.  By now it had got pretty hot so we called for a drink and a bite to eat before going for a siesta.  For tea we had french tonight but both struggled to finish our main dishes - think we are getting fed up of eating out now - oh for some home made shepherds pie!
