Towards the end of Lake Wanaka - on the drive towards the west coast

After a cold night in the tent we awoke to a sunny morning.  We spent the morning in Wanaka.  Santa was visiting the town today, it is quite strange hearing xmas songs and seeing santa when its hot and sunny outside - not right really!

Today we are starting to make our way up to Christchurch, our destination today is Franz Josef, about half way up the west coast of the South Island.  It was quite a long drive, taking about 6 hours to get there.  The scenery was fantastic though, the route taking us along the lakes Wanaka and Hawea, massive lakes with snow capped mountains behind them.  Leaving the lakes behind us we continued through Mount Aspiring National Park, the scenery now consisted of bush covered mountains, waterfalls and fast flowing rivers.  The road twisted and turned through the spectacular scenery.

We reached Franz Josef at about 6pm and after trying a couple of places for accomodation got a cabin on a campsite a mile out of town.  We visited Franz Josef last time we came to New Zealand and it has certainly got bigger and busier - as has a lot of New Zealand, towns seem to be growing at a fast rate as the country tries to keep up with its increasing popularity.  In the evening we went back into town for something to eat - we got two meals and two pints for 13 pounds - not bad!
