Arrival in the Tropics

Both woke up quite early, had managed to get a good few hours sleep, despite it being the rockiest train ever - a long way from a smooth ride. After breakfast, we spent a while in our own cabins reading. After lunch in our cabin, we went for a game of scrabble in the posh cabin. We could definitely tell we were getting into the tropics, passing lots of banana plantations.
Arrived in Cairns at 4pm. Despite the heat, we decided to walk to our accomodation. We reached Pam and Dave's hotel first (very posh looking), dropped them off, and continued down the Esplanade to our budget accomodation. We have booked a motel room for the next six nights, very reasonable rates, and it has a pool, so good all round. The room was good, just like the kind of place you get in Greece -it's got a fridge and air-con, so we are happy. After sorting out our stuff and having a shower, we went over to Pam and Dave's hotel. They have a room on the 11th floor with a great view over Cairns and the sea.
Went to an Italian restaurant on the Esplanade, and ate outside. There is nothing better than to eat outside; even when we have barbeques outside in the summer in England, we end up shivering at the end of the night (usually in woolly jumpers). After good food and wine, we retired early to bed. It's exhausting this holidaying.
