From Faya to N'Djamena
April 12, 1997
Probably the most dangerous part of the whole trip: In spite of GPS, we got totally lost in the Erg Djourab, a huge area of medium high sand dunes, the ground of lake Tchad during the last ice age. We spent a whole day looking for some tracks, trying to correct the course, but the dunes forced us more and more in the wrong direction. Then in the afternoon we suddenly saw the old military post of Koro Toro right in front of us - a reason to breathe a sigh of relief, if we had not had the information that the whole area of Koro Toro had been heavily mined... So we tried to follow our own traces back and then drove eastwords until just before sunset, we finally saw a truck driving on the right way...
