Ok so it's not some exotic far off land but, this is some of the most amazing scenery I have ever seen. Here in our very own backyard! Some of these places are nothing more than a town to pass by on the way to a more exciting place for most people. However I see much beauty in these places, to me these are the heart and soul of America.

snowed in

After we left Alpine it took us almost an hour to make it back to Marathon.   When we finally got there we learned that US HWY 90 was now closed down thru Sanderson because of the snow, as well as I-10!  Well, what can I say we Texans just don't know how to drive in the snow!  My husband was less then pleased he couldn't believe there was no snow plows already out clearing the roads and sanding them down!  Sorry honey, I'm sure it's not easy removing the rust off those old plows ya know?  We spent the night at a little inn after realizing we were not the only ones in town that where in the same predicament since both hotels were fully booked.  We couldn't have gotten a nicer place though our room was the only one with it's own bathroom (and jacuzzi tub) in the inn, the upstairs rooms had to share a bathroom.

After seeing our room my husband was in a much better mood and after fully taking advantage of that nice jacuzzi we headed out into the town for dinner about 7pm.  Well, wouldn't you know there was only one restaurant open (I'm beggining to see a theme here) and they wouldn't be able to seat us till around 9:45pm that is if we made reservations right then and there.  So, we made our reservations and decided to walk around for a little, all the little stores were closed except for one so after going in and buying some hot chocolate and a few other things we headed back to our room and waited for dinner time.  In the meantime the girls were playing outside and building a tiny snowman for our little porch.  During the night the old oak tree in front of the inn could not stand the weight of the snow and one of it's huge branches gave way and fell right in front of the house, luckily our room was in the back of the house!  No damage to the old house it just made it to where I could not take a picture of the inn without the obstructed view!  By 10am the next day the roads were clear enough to drive it was a nice sunny morning so, we took off and by the time we reached Sanderson there was very little evidence of a snow storm.   That is sooooo TEXAS for you!

Charming little inn in Marathon, TX, we stayed at for just a little over $100. The place was clean and well kept as well as beautiful in an old rustic way! We got the downstairs bedroom with a queen size bed as well as the only private bathroom in the inn, that included a nice little jacuzzi tub, and it's own little back porch. For being an old house it was pretty updated it had central heat/ac as well as the remodeled bathroom in our room. However, even with all the updates it still kept the older home charm! The outside was rich with shade from tons of old oak trees which added to the charm of the place. Obviously we had no choice but to stay here the day we passed thru but, if ever I'm in Marathon again voluntarily I would pick this place to stay at again. As I said on my blog we had a tree fall in the middle of the night obstructing the view of the inn from the front but, you can go to their website to see it!

Ok so here was this super fancy restaurant in the middle of little Marathon, TX. Really small town with a population of only 4,000. Not the only restaurant in town but, certainly the only open one that night! Really good food with a nice presentation but, definitely what I would call pricey. My husband and I had to wonder how they stayed afloat! We did not get to eat till about 10:00pm that night so, by the time I got my plate in front of me I was beyond starving! Half way thru scarfing down my food I realized I did not take a picture of it so, sorry ya'll! Shame too because like I said, very nicely presented. My husband and I ordered the bison rib-eye steaks, medium rare of course! Now unless we go to a steak house my husband and I tend to order rare just to get medium rare, if you order medium rare you usually end up with medium and so forth but, we figured even though this is not a steak house at 40 bucks a plate they better darn well know how to cook it right! We were not dissapointed the steaks were great. My girls had the chicken and it was really good too. Now one other thing since our reservations were at 9:45 we got there at 9:30 and they had some people lingering so, there was no table for us. Instead of making us wait they set up some tables in their hotel lobby for us and a few others and sat us right away, that's what I call going the extra mile! Under circumstances like that who cares that they were a bit overpriced!
