field trip with my daughter
Just 8 miles west of Sonora, Texas you can find the caverns of Sonora, these caverns are amongst the most active with 90% of their formations still growing. It is an amazing cave with some cool formations. Unfortunatly the caves most famous formation was the butterfly and in 2006 some prankster or pranksters decided to break off the top part of the wing. The butterfly was the only known formation like it in the world. It was formed by two fish tail helictite growths that shared the same attachment point of the cave wall. Looking at it now it is still a very beautiful formation, I had never seen it whole so other than the guide letting us know it had been broken, I would have never known! Our guide at the time stated that a natural formation of that type "could" happen again but, the chances were like winning the Texas lottery 100,000 times in a row! It is such a shame to see people not respecting nature in that way! I am posting my picture as well as one of the internet when it was whole so that ya'll may appreciate the damage that was done! The funny part of this story if there is one, is that the guide told us they had a pretty good idea of who did it being that it was whole for one tour and not the next they were able to narrow it down to one group and everyone on the tour used their credit card to pay the admission so, apparently they did not have a smooth criminal on their hands!
The Sonora caverns was something that I had said, I wanted to see before leaving Texas. In April I got my chance when my daughters class took a field trip to the caverns. My daughter and I had an an amazing time hanging out together, having mom and daughter time! We even wore butterfly shirts that day in honor of the butterfly and so that all knew we were there together. Not that you could think for a moment that she is not related to me!
