camping at Canyon Lake

San Antonio Travel Blog › entry 2 of 25 › view all entries

Ok so it's not some exotic far off land but, this is some of the most amazing scenery I have ever seen. Here in our very own backyard! Some of these places are nothing more than a town to pass by on the way to a more exciting place for most people. However I see much beauty in these places, to me these are the heart and soul of America.

We love to camp!  However theres only so many smores you can eat, and only so many camp songs you can take!  So, when we camp we look for places that have a lot to do or are nearby places where there is alot to do.  This is especially important with kids, otherwise you get to hear alot of "mom, I'm bored!"  We chose canyon lake because it was close to San Antonio and we planned our trip to visit the Natural Bridge Caverns and sea world.

We have been to the caverns a few times, but each time I go I am still in awe of the place.  Another miracle of creation in my opinion.  Now my pictures do not do the place any justice, but I never claimed to be any good at photography, I'm just addicted to taking pictures!  The caverns are one of the largest in the state of Texas and depending on which tour you take it can take anywhere from 1&1/2 hours to 4 hours.

well, hello there!
We have only ever done the North Caverns tour which is the shortest.  The other tours include repelling and my kids have always been to young to go on these tours when we go.

After the caverns on the same day, just a few miles up the road is a wildlife ranch, we also visited.  It's safari style you drive thru in your car, but here you can actually feed the animals from your car.  Those animals are so used to getting fed by people that they are not one bit shy about coming up to your car!  The girls really enjoyed that part of the trip.  They also have a small petting zoo next to the gift shop, my favorite pic is the one of my baby feeding the goats.

Sea world is always cool, great place to take kids.

It's amazing to me that even though we go every year they are still always very excited to go.  What I love about the place is the tribute they pay to the military men and women at each shamu show.  Being a military spouse I am extremly proud of my husband and what he does, so it always does my heart good when I see that others appreciate what he does as well.

As for the campsite, it was the nicest one I've ever stayed at so far.  They had a nice little beach area that the we spent hours at everyday.  As well as a fishing piere we spent a good while at one day too.  I am not a fisher so I din't catch anything, I think I was talking too much.  However I was content to sit there and just enjoy my family!

When we go camping ... we go with them to swim, trails, fishing, caves, canoeing, I'll skip rocks with them, taught the girls how to collect frogs and minnows and let then put them in our mini-blowup-boat, parks, and like you fires and smores ... I bring my laptop for DVD's when they tire otherwise make them use their head ,,, our oldest will say "I'm bored" and I say "go collect rocks", "climb a tree", or "swim", "watch a movie" ... I always set up my tent at a spot with a water front so that they can keep themselves occupied as I did when I was little!

Good pics for 2006 ... I like what you both like doing with your family ...

it is a drive thru, we did not have a problem with overly aggressive ostriches though. however the zebras once in your window they were a bit hard to get rid of, lol! they got right in your face, too!

I've been wanting to go to that wildlife ranch. Is that the ranch where you drive through in your car? If it is, I heard the ostriches were pretty aggressive. My ex-girlfriend was telling me that when she was younger they went up there and a ostrich stuck it's head in the car and was pecking at her. My family went up to the same place and they had a similar encounter. I think it's hilarious.
