a batty adventure!

Ok so it's not some exotic far off land but, this is some of the most amazing scenery I have ever seen. Here in our very own backyard! Some of these places are nothing more than a town to pass by on the way to a more exciting place for most people. However I see much beauty in these places, to me these are the heart and soul of America.

a batty adventure!

the mouth of the cave
Just 23 miles north of Brackettville, Texas, ther is a place called Kickappo Caverns State Park.  Whitin the park they have a bat cave called, Stewart bat cave, where you can literally go and watch millions of bats take flight as the sun begins to go down!  The cave is rather small yet it still fits about a million bats in it incredible!  We went this Saturday the girls even wore "special shirts" just for the occassion!  They say, it takes about two hours for all the bats to come out and they welcome visitors to stay the entire time if they wish!  However after just about 30 minutes the smell of the guano on the bats can become a little overbearing so, we made it for about 45 minutes.  It's really neat to watch mother nature in action and I'm glad my family and I got the chance to experince a bat flight.

The park ranger stated, that while the exit is cool the entry of the bats back into the cave is even more amazing and while they may in the future offer tis option at this time they just show the exiting.  The park fee is $5 per person.  Another thing they have to offer at this state park is wild adventure cave tours, you know where you sign waiver forms for your life before entering, go into the cave with head lights and repell down, crawl thru small spaces, and come out just incredibly dirty!  They are open for 12 and up and those are $12 a person, which is actually incredibly cheap other places that do this can sometimes charge in the $100 range!  We did not do the cave thing since we had our little one with us, but we are going to try and make it back before we leave with just the big girls for this.
