sleeping the night in Detroit

The start always the same- lying on the floor in Detroit Metro, can’t sleep the lights are too bright, starting the new adventure full of positive feelings  I can’t sleep. Traveling  the US back and forth is acts of memory recall. I been to every state except Hawaii (God won’t let me therefore I collect Hawaiian shirts), most 5 or more times looking for vintage and just joy riding my way through life. It could be 3 or more years since I been to a certain small town and like photos, the mind is piecing together: purpose, where I want to go, people I met, what I bought, drank, slept.

Traveling abroad as I do the mind is a blank slate. Every experience adds the colors, brush strokes.  Get to a continent, plan not much further than the area where hostels are centered, adventure is bound to be.

not me but another with is a whale shark.
The road of life we ride, it dumps us, picks us up, kills some, if we can ride it well then really whatever happens. There is no way to say this is better than … nobody can judge the sacrifices… but in the end the road is all yours and if not we drown corporate humiliation.  So is life.

Hostels should be places to meet people, enjoy your time, drink, smoke, sex then on the last night be alittle saddened and drink alittle more cause your saying goodbye to interesting people who in all likelihood you won’t see again.  Kebah is a good hostel. The positive vibes are certainly high when you first check into a place, when I leave I want to be alittle higher.  I meet Dutch who if not for a short time have struck my interest. Dutch girls must be the most perfect woman, everyman loves them.

There is more than one traveling so it is easy to have the heart flutter quickly after saying good bye to another. If there is one stable thing in the world it is Dutch girls are cool. Good people seem to gravitate to each other and in Cancun it is no different. Like roads in America, hostels I become familiar with. I prefer travelers who are solo- low dependency, quick to make friends and able to let things roll off without too much trouble. Solos don’t tend to drink any better and laugh louder but are more special for me.  God blesses all the former (except Canadians) colonies of her majesty’s service-  drink and laugh they do but the ex-colonies can’t travel alone.
holbox is. after a rain
Cute folk but like a puppy left at a truck stop.  For example…South Africans feel so lonely if not surrounded by other S. Africans, and if not then an Aussie, English, a American or Canadian.  If I rattle on enough, I find the point I want to make! Here it is: Solos are more apt to enjoy the culture, have better stories of locals and basically are more interesting.  So it is Cancun.

From there I went to Holbox Island to swim with the whale sharks. My first hitching too! It would have been better story if I got from point A to B cause my own wits, but like so much in life, I fucked up and slept through my bus connection and ended up in Timazu (far away).

So I lost time, got a huge f-ing blister that a week later still hasn’t disappeared, but I arrived! In Yucatan here, people don’t really grasp hitchhiking so much. But also my bust, there on the road are enormous speedbumps that all traffic must stop going over. You would think the intelligent thing is to find your speedbump and wait out the traffic odds to your advantage. I always take the hardest f-ing road possible and always hitching I pick up my bag and walk after 10 minutes waiting. Acting fool headed I guess keeps me young. Anywho Holbox Is…  it is possible, an island can’t be below sea level, right? (figure that sentence out) One drop of rain and the island is flooded so it is so. It is a nice Island as tourist islands go. Resorts look cool, beach is white sand, the water not very clear unfortunately.
we hitched to and from the ruins, about 5kms into town
Whale Shark swimming I make similarity to tiger safari in India. Wake up early, search in a circle 4 hours, going a 100mph for a damn tiger. Then a Tiger is tied to a fucking tree- pieces of shit! Here, 3 hours out, two 15minute timed whale shark swimming, the whale is surrounded by 5 or more boats- a complete cluster fuck if your looking for that “Wow is that a whale shark I just bumped into” experience.  There are better ways of kicking $100 into the sewer.

I did meet a little Aussie full of sex and smoke, god bless the youth. And a better way to make my way to Chichin Itza and back to Cancun.

Next to Chichin Itza.  I didn’t budget enough money for this cause I didn’t know there is a road from Holbox. Then at the stepping off point Valaloid I found it was Saturday, banks are closed to change my cash.

they call this the big nose god.
Greeted by a beautiful Russian girl at the hostel didn’t make my decision easier. Cenotes are huge sinkholes! Sinkholes are from when the asteroids pelted this part of the world eons ago, fresh water and draw Russians girls like… porn! (That isn’t funny, but alittle) Great for snorkeling and diving. Actually after I write this I will go snorkeling in a Cenotes- always best to walk 5 kms x2 in the middle of the day.  Again around noon, good and hot. Right now it is 10:30 am in Tulum and I have a sweat towel for forehead and another for an arm rest.  Back in Volliloid, I barely have enough money for two excursion- bed at a hostel or see Chichen Itza.  I figure Chichen Itza, then hitch my way back to Cancun.
The laggerhead turtle lays its eggs up on the beach, save the turtle heads must put signs up cause the grounds are luxury hotels.
I buy my bus ticket and in front of me is the loveliest brown girl (me likesim color)with a huge backpack. She is from north Mexico, traveling for 2 months through Central America and is headed back the next day to help with the protest. It seems Mexico government is headed for peaceful change or as she said Revolt! We spent the afternoon seeing the ruins and yes ”disabled” works in Mexico too- Viva Mexico! Entry to the site was free so I had enough money for dinner and bus back!   After dinner was the night light show, so so, not spectacular.  Talking with her about the people, where she is from, her life, and as anti government protests walk  in silence right by the café as we eat is improving my Spanish. In an alternative world I imagine myself held up in a small city down here, practicing my Spanish by spending loads of  hours: sweating through lessons, hot latina prostitute sex, and writing with dabbles of heroin use.

I haven’t tried it, having shown up late the one time I was suppose to, everyone was to fucked up.   Sounds yummy for a few months ne! Anywho… back to reality. That bad blister tore apart my poor sandle or vice versa, fixing my sandle I used my teeth to pull the needle through the sole, and chipped my tooth now I look more like a Scotsman. Give me more character. Character for the rich is nice clothes or a car, to the poor it is bottle opening chips in the teeth. Cest la vie. From Cancun, went on to Akumal.

Akumal, great off shore snorkeling with the sea turtles and at night sea turtles came on shore to nest.  Couldn’t photo it cause we didn’t want to scare the turtles.

asked this Israeli couple to send me a picture after I caught them taking it. Nice couple we talked a few hours.
The tours say there are some 75 turtles- mostly loggerheads in the area but from all the tourist I talked to… maybe I saw the most turtles. The highlight: I followed this big one forever and he brought me to 2 others- it was splendid. They feed on kelp, think like if cows could swim. Akumal is laid back, off the beaten path and very nice to spend the day. At dinner I met a mother and daughter combo to spend time with. Mom asked lots of questions and the daughter interpreted. The daughter was kind and offered some Spanish lessons. In Tulum, farther down the coast, there are ruins overlooking the coast, Cenotes, a few of this and that but nothing to busy. It is good. A good place to make the destination choice of the future. And still not made.
