Lyon - Eve of New Zealand Game

So, after half a week in Lyon, sick as a dog, I finally got to the weekend I was really looking forward to.  The night before the All Blacks game was South Africa vs. England in Paris.  Earlier that day, my sister and I attended New Zealand's captain run and the press conference.  It was quite funny watching all the guys from the major tv stations in NZ wondering where the two girls were from.  They didn't come up and ask, which might have been the professionally courteous thing to do.  Instead one of them decided we must be from Portugal :)  Still, it was pretty cool to be behind the scene like that.  Got to watch them practice from the stands, Richie and Dan having kicking competitions, and then Jerry Collins give a press conference (an experience in itself).

Following the captain's run, we headed off to the Adidas store, where some of the All Black players were making an appearance and signing pictures and all that.  My time to be a true rugby geek.  We stood in line for nearly three hours, surrounded by those who defy the laws of the queue.  I mean, when you trample an eight year old, you've got a problem...anyway, at the end of the day I did get my rugby ball signed by three All Blacks, plus I got to sandwich with Chris Masoe and Rodney So'oialo for a group photo, so grin, grin...

Later that night we found a Scottish bar in the old town to watch the evening's match.  The bar was packed and could have used one more tv, but on the bright side, we got to meet Dallas Hamilton, a rugby player in New Zealand and brother of sometime All Black Scott Hamilton.  He spent most of the time passed out but his friends were fun, if a little rowdy (even for me...I know!)  In the end, South Africa demolished England.  Hard to imagine that the same English team would go on to kick Australia out of the quarter finals!  Goes to show, you can never tell.  I certainly would have lost my shirt if I'd had any money riding on this tournament...
