Tricky politics on the cab ride

After taking a couple semesters of Arabic I was off to experience the Levant for my second time -- and to venture to the southern border areas which were under Israeli occupation in 1999 and with recent events won't be accessible for years to come.

Tricky politics on the cab ride

We wound our way from Beirut International Airport through the poor southern parts of town toward and up the mountains looming behind the city. Signs of politics abounded outside the cab in the form of flyers and billboards for upcoming elections and inside the cab via touchy political banter. Our destination was the quiet, French/Arabic speaking Maronite Christian town of Broummana only 45 minutes or so from Beirut. As we gained elevation the views of the Mediterranean became increasingly beautiful. (More to come, especially regarding the conversation in the cab!)

I remember some touchy political banter in a cab ride in Malaysia; I can't wait to hear this story!!
