Tangkahan is a small village in Northern Sumatra. You can get there by local bus from Binjai or hire motorbikes/4WD from Bukit Lawang however you wil have to leave very early in the morning if you wish to bathe the elephants. The local buses are not the most reliable and so tourists with limited Bahasa should check thoroughly the bus times or leave time for any broken down buses or complications. As it is a small village there are no cash machines and tourists should take enough cash to get there and back if a higher fare is demanded.
There are seven elephants and they are sometimes used for jungle trekking. There are treks that can be arranged from here that take four days and finish in Bukit Lawang or the other way around. Shorter treks are available.
When you arrive at Tangkahan you need to pay 2000Rp at the Visitors Centre to go down to the river. Then to cross the river it is 10,000Rp per person for 3 days, you can cross as many times as you like. However if you are just there to bathe the elephants, river crossing is not necessary. There are guesthouses on both sides of the river. There is also a hot spring and waterfalls.
