staying at hostels as a backpacker has lots of advantages:
first of all,they are cheaper than the cheapest hotels.
secondly,most of them serve free breakfast and internet connection,also they are clean and safe almost as much as hotels.
thirdly,it's a valuable thing to meet other backpackers from other countries and cultures.
the most probable problem is to stay with other people,sometimes 3 or 5 or even 9,but i think this is not a big deal,usually no problem about safety of your belongings because almost all hostels have locker room either in the room or in the floor,moreover one can think it's not so easy to sleep in such a crowded room,but i don't think so:after a tired day you wouldn't care the other guys snoring,farting,talking whatever:)
